Description

This is a pretty faint edge-on galaxy in Andromeda, that you don't see many images of - you probably won't see it through the eyepiece unless you've got a big telescope, great optics and superb skies. Well, I certainly couldn't see it through my Orion Optics DX250. It has a magnitude of 10.8 and a surface brightness of 14.1 mag/square arcmin.

It actually looks like a disturbed galaxy to me, which is what attracted it to me, but on close examination I could find no evidence for the presence of an interacting companion. No quasars within a radius of 60 arcmin from ngc 7640.

It measures about 11' x 2.5', is classified SBc and lies at the relatively close distance of 19MLy.

My image comprised 50 x 2 minute exposures through my 10" f4.8 reflector. Camera was a SX H9C OSC ccd. Guided with my KWIQ guider using PHD software. Acquired and processed in AstroArt3 with some assistance from PixInsight and NEAT.
